The City of Alexandria’s Transportation Planning Administrative Guidelines determine the need for a Traffic Impact Study.  Our traffic engineers assist developers when a traffic impact study is required, scoping and coordinating them as needed with the City’s transportation officials.  

Depending on the peak hour trips generated by the development, the size of study determines the vehicular study area, transit, bicycle, and pedestrian study area, and parking study area.  

Regardless of the size of a development size or whether a development requires another type of transportation analysis, Alexandria requires every new development to complete a Transportation Screening Worksheet, which provides City staff with information regarding the proposed density and mix of uses proposed for the development, trip generation estimates, and the TMP tier for the project.
