Transportation Studies and Expert Witness Testimony Lead to Approvals

Sidwell Friends School is a pre-K to12, co-educational, Quaker day school founded in 1883. The Middle and Upper Schools are located on a 15-acre campus at 3825 Wisconsin Avenue in the Tenleytown section of Northwest Washington, D.C. Sidwell’s Middle and Upper School Campus was renovated in 2005 to include an expanded Middle School, a renovated Arts Center, a new gym, a new Quaker Meeting House, and a new underground parking structure beneath an athletic field.

W+A was selected to perform the transportation study. We recommended a transportation management plan that encourages carpooling and public transportation for students and staff. The plan restricts student drop-off/pick-up to two on-site locations and along the Middle School’s frontage on 37th Street.

W+A also provided expert witness testimony before The District of Columbia Board of Zoning Adjustment (BZA) and the local Advisory Neighborhood Commission. The District of Columbia Board of Zoning Adjustment (BZA) approved these plans as well as an increase in the enrollment cap from 801 students to 850 students.

Access to and egress from the school is now provided via a new, signalized driveway, opposite Rodman Street. A second point of egress is also provided via the school’s existing, signalized driveway. This traffic plan, for the first time, provides full movement access/egress to and from Wisconsin Avenue at two signalized intersections.
