Earlier this year, CIM Group and Centennial Yards Co. opened The Mitchell, a 304-unit residential tower within the $5 billion Centennial Yards mixed-use development underway in downtown Atlanta. This development continues to transform a former railyard area known as The Gulch. Our parking planning team prepared the parking management plan and worked with the design team on the parking layout for The Mitchell.
Located at the intersection of Centennial Olympic Park Drive and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, The Mitchell is the first residential tower and ground-up building completed within Centennial Yards and is “steps away” from Mercedes-Benz Stadium, State Farm Arena, and lies in proximity to four MARTA stations.
Parking Management Plan and Parking Layout Issues
Wells + Associates addressed parking circulation and management issues for the project. Our team provided schematic level comments, developed multiple garage design options and ramp/access recommendations, and provided parking analyses related to multiple user groups, including hotel, residential, retail, and office-related traffic.
Our review of the overall functional system capacity of the garage focused on the number of parking bays, parking space geometry, ramp configuration, and the number of access points. The review addressed parking spaces by size and use/restriction, such as short term, public, compact, accessible, and car/vanpool. We also addressed line striping details, traffic directional arrows, vehicle queue lanes, and the location of pay stations and access/control gates.
Our analysis also identified the number and location of reserved spaces for electric vehicles, as well as restrictions related to activities such as deliveries and office visitors.
In related projects, you can read a case study about a shared parking assessment and an off-site parking inventory that Wells + Associates previously conducted for the Centennial Yards project. We were also pleased to work on an adjacent project for a hotel that is slated to open in the same area soon.
