At Wells + Associates, we appreciate being involved with projects that support the regional economy and help businesses and people prosper. Our firm provided traffic engineering and design services for the new Saval Foodservice Headquarters in the Columbia Gateway campus.
As part of the development team focused on the transportation aspects of this project, we were delighted to attend the groundbreaking of Saval Foodservice’s new 230,000-square-foot headquarters and distribution center at Columbia Gateway in Howard County, Maryland, along with company employees, county leaders, and other members of the design team. It was a great moment for this 94-year-old family-run company.
Saval Foodservice is the largest family-owned, independent broadline food service distributor in the Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia region. Developed in partnership with Howard Hughes Communities and builder Kinsley Construction, the new campus will bring Saval Foodservice and its 1932 Specialty Produce and Meat division together under one roof, consolidating operations that have long been split across separate Howard County facilities.
Traffic Impact Study, Pavement and Marking Plans
We are often involved in projects years before construction happens, so when groundbreaking happens, we are delighted. Wells + Associates supported the project on the transportation side, preparing the traffic impact study that helped guide the site’s approvals and the signing and marking plans that will direct traffic through the finished campus.
W+A worked alongside fellow project team member Gutschick, Little & Weber, whose planning, civil engineering, and surveying work rounded out the site design. “We are proud to be a partner on this project and combine our expertise in development with an organization like Saval Foods,” said Gabe Chung, Senior Vice President at Howard Hughes Communities, at the ceremony.
A New Chapter of Growth
The project is expected to retain roughly 391 existing Saval Foodservice jobs and add 107 new full-time positions over the next four years, backed by state and county support. “Bringing our operations together under one roof will allow us to work more efficiently and strengthen collaboration across our teams,” said Saval Foodservice President and CEO Paul Saval, describing the new headquarters as a statement of the company’s commitment to Maryland after nearly a century in business.
With site work now underway, Saval Foodservice expects the new headquarters to anchor its next chapter of growth as an independent, family-owned distributor.
