Colorado Springs Signal Design at The Sands | Wells + Associates

Nicholas Kosar

Wells + Associates provided traffic design services for an intersection in the Sands development in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The Sands is a 115-acre site consisting of approximately 300 single family dwelling units and 55,000 square feet of commercial uses. The project is to be annexed into the City of Colorado Springs from El Paso County including a portion of Constitution Avenue.

Traffic Design Services and Signing and Pavement Marking Modifications

To gain access to the southern portion of the site, the fourth leg of an existing signalized intersection at the northeast quadrant of Constitution Avenue and Marksheffel Road would be extended, providing primary access to the commercial portion of the site and secondary access to residential. Adding the fourth leg of the Constitution Avenue and King Soopers Center – Sand Hill intersection required the signal to be modified along with signing and pavement marking modifications.

Wells + Associates provided traffic design services for the intersection to add the signal equipment for the Sand Hill approach to the intersection and provided signing and pavement marking designs.  Although the original design for the intersection was built to El Paso County Signal Standards, the design included City of Colorado Springs requirements as the intersection equipment was also being annexed into the City. The design featured reuse of existing signal equipment. W+A is also providing construction support services as needed and has completed a review of signal equipment submittals.

Project Results

Working with Galloway & Company, the site civil engineer for the project, and the project owners, W+A was able to work with the City of Colorado Springs to obtain approval of the signal modification plan. The owner has secured a signal contractor and is in the process of constructing the improvements at the intersection.
